Biodiesel is how we roll

by adam lowry, July 30, 2008

Biodiesel1

Something big and special has been rolling down the highways since April. We recently rolled out with a new transport truck. It’s running on biodiesel fuel and is one of the ways we are decreasing the carbon footprint of method shipments within the US. The addition of our new biodiesel truck will save an estimated 62,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 686 tons of carbon dioxide annually. That's like planting 3,400 trees a year!

What's cool about our biodiesel rig?

Biodiesel2

Enhanced Aerodynamics
  • Marker lights that are flush with bright durable LED lights
  • Mirrors on door/hood curved for wind cutting stability

Low Rolling Resistance Tires

  • Reduced rolling resistance with single-wide and aluminum tires
  • Reduced weight

Automatic Tire Inflation System -

  • Pressure sensors and automatic inflation system allows for increased fuel efficiency

Seen it on the road already? Let us know. Or even send in your method truck snapshots – we’d love to see them too!

More colorful inspirations from Japan

by adam lowry, July 30, 2008

Quick stop for a drink and some snacks turns into an incredible discovery in merchandising during a creative trek to Japan. Clean, faced-out... it even looked like it was polished before it was put into it's little protective bed. After we photographed them, posed with them, figured out how much they were and talked about how to get our handwash bottles into little nurturing nests....  we ate them.

What does it mean to “Design for the Environment”?

by adam lowry, July 24, 2008

You’ve heard from method’s very own environmental stewards – we call them “greenskeepers” – on our blog before, but the Design for the Environment (DfE) office of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also has our back. We work closely with this group of respected scientists to perform a final check on all of our formulations, validating that the ingredients we choose are safe for people and safe for the environment – “recognized for safer chemistry,” as they put it.

Dfelogo_2 We dig DfE for the rigor of their assessment work. They take the same approach we do: that products should be made with inherently safe materials, avoiding any potential safety hazards before we start to formulate. DfE researches a broad range of health and environmental characteristics for each proposed ingredient, as does a third party environmental research institute, the Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency (EPEA).  The head of the EPEA is Dr. Michael Braungart, who developed the concept of “cradle to cradle” to describe the ideal life cycle of products and authored a book of the same title with architect William McDonough.

After DfE performs their in-depth assessments on the formulations, they make recommendations if necessary and decide to either recognize the formulation or not. So far in our collaboration, DfE has recognized over 50 of our products – which actually accounts for every one we've submitted to them!

So why go through the ingredient assessment process twice? It’s because we're really proud of our formulations and want to communicate their good health to as many people as possible – that means you! DfE, with their expertise and credibility as an EPA office, help tell this story through their DfE logo - the little globe you see here and on many of our bottles. And then the EPEA endorsement is the icing on the cake.

If you ever have questions or comments on our formulations, please tell us here, write info@methodhome.com, or give us a call at 1-866-9-method (1-866-963-8463).

methodhome.com gets a makeover.

by annab, July 21, 2008

Ever envious of the products side of the business, which regularly enjoys packaging and design makeovers, methodhome.com has finally gotten what amounts to its own fancy, new party dress.
After almost a year of planning, we’ve finally launched our new website.

Some cool things we’ve added since the old site:

  • A killer new homepage.  We added a carousel mostly because we can never decide which stories we want to talk about…so, we decided to tell them all.

  • 3 ways to browse the method collection. Whether you know exactly what you’re looking for, or you’re new to method, finding exactly what product you’re looking for should be easy as pie.

  • New e-commerce experience. We call it a mini-cart. Nothing revolutionary other than a lot fewer clicks!

  • Tidbits. Basically the pop-ups you find on product pages that give you a little more info on a particular topic. The tidbits we have are a bit slim now but eventually start looking for video and audio clips embedding in them throughout our site.

Some things that are still coming along:

  • Search capabilities.

  • Breadcrumbing. Think Little Red Riding Hood…. wait, maybe that’s Hansel and Gretel. Basically, it’s a way of helping you know where you are on the site at all times. Like a trail of breadcrumbs…minus the small, furry woodland animals that eat them up.

  • More, more, more content  - including interviews and in-depth content from our design and sustainability experts at method.

I’m not sure any of us figured on it taking quite so long but alas, here it is and now we can begin the real work –putting interesting stuff on the site. While the site will never actually be done, we thought we’d take this opportunity to see how you like. What do you love? What do you hate? What would you like to see added? We’d love to hear your comments. So, post away.

Airomatherapy: creative inspirations from Japan

by adam lowry, July 21, 2008

We spotted this menu in a window in Japan. We were drawn to the incredible scents (bayberry, anyone?) and the colors in what looked like the window of a nail salon. Further sleuthing revealed this to be an airbar, where you can order up some fresh air, infuse with the scent of your choice and then sit back and breathe deeply. Great way to get a fresh air fix in the middle of the city.

Find out if you have a running toilet

by danny, July 13, 2008

We’ve all heard the prank call “Hello, is your refrigerator running?”  But have you actually ever thought maybe your toilet is running---and wasting water---without you even knowing it?

Anybody would realize their toilet has sprung a leak if water had gushed all over the bathroom floor. But it’s inside the tank---where the fresh water refills after each flush---that may be leaking fresh water slowly and consistently into the bowl of your toilet. You can’t hear it or see it, and you could be wasting hundreds of gallons of water.

It’s simple to find out: drop about 6 drops of a dark food dye into the tank of the toilet---red or blue work great---and then wait an hour or so.   Come back and look into the bowl of the toilet and see if it has changed color.  If you see any color, your toilet is leaking water. This is when you need to call a plumber to fix it or, it makes a great case to invest in a new water-saving toilet.
